PROJECT BAALA

The programme was organized by AMYAA NGO and CHILDLINE ROING in collaboration with Project
BAALA based at Delhi. Project BALA is an initiative by two socialworkers from Kolkata namely Soumya Dabriwal and Aradhana Rai Gupta who were both passionate about educating rural women about hygiene and sanitation and decided to start working together and launched Project Baala.

The project aims at spreading awareness about menstruation in rural schools along with providing rural women and girls with environment-friendly sanitary pads. The programme was attended by Mrs. Seema Linggi GPC Mayu-2, Ms. Ashanu Linggi Centre Administrator OSC-ICDS, Mr. Oying Lego District Coordinator MSK-ICDS, Team AMYAA, CHILDLINE and 142 participants comprising of adolescents and women from every corners of Lower Dibang valley.


Speaking of the occasion RK Paul Chawang Secretary of AMYAA NGO briefed about Project BAALA and spoke about this initiative as a starting chapter in the district in solving the long problem face
by adolescence girl and women in the district. He also spoke about the long term in which AMYAA NGO with support from District Administration would put an effort in bringing a production unit in the district which can sustain the needs of menstrual hygiene as well as bring employment.


Seema Linggi stated the importance of awareness and the need to break the cycle of taboos. She advised the participants to educate from the programme breaking the old social norms of taboos and educating the younger generation about menstrual periods from Home. Ashanu Linggi in her message spoke on the activities of One Stop Centre for women under domestic violence and Oying Lego too spoke on the importance of creating awareness on menstrual hygiene in rural areas.

 

The Programme objectives was to focus on solving menstrual hygiene related issue through a dual solution
of awareness and sustainability that aims to curb the inhibitions or rural women caused by social stigma. The Programme concluded with distribution of 250 eco-friendly sanitary packets consisting of three pads each. The pads are eco friendly and sponsored by BAALA which can be reuse for 2 years at maximum.
